Kangaroo House Bed & Breakfast, built in 1907, features rooms named after local wild birds. The Steller's Jay Suite, located on the first floor, includes a king bed, stained glass reading lamps, an antique armoire, a private sitting room with 1860s wing back chairs, and a full-size bed hidden in a cabinet. The private bath has a sink custom-installed in an antique birdseye maple dresser and a full-size tub/shower combination. The Northern Flicker Suite, on the second floor, offers a Mission style King size bed, a chaise, a separate sitting room with a 32" flat screen for movie viewing, and a private bathroom with a standing shower. The Goldfinch Room, also on the second floor, features a large King bed with sleigh headboard, antique furnishings, a spacious private bath with a tub/shower combination, and a view of Douglas-Fir and Western Redcedar trees. The Nuthatch Room has an elevated Queen-sized private chamber draped in rich red tapestry with an antique chandelier, plus a twin bed under the eave. The Chickadee Room, on the second floor, includes a Queen-size bed, antique armoire & chest of drawers, white wicker chairs, and a private bathroom with shower. Suites have their own wifi network, a flat screen, and selection of DVDs, but no TV. Terrycloth robes & beach towels, a hairdryer, and a flashlight are available in each room.
Breakfast at Kangaroo House
Kangaroo House serves breakfast made from scratch, with organic ingredients, seasonal fruits, vegetables, smoked salmon & meats, and locally sourced ingredients. The morning meal may include fresh cut ripe fruits, Blueberry or Cherry Clafouti, a local egg and sauteed vegetable Frittata, Alsatian Rosti, Wild Alaskan Salmon Quiche, Stuffed Baked Pears, Homemade Granola, Pecan Pie Bites, Cloudcakes, and home-marinated crispy bacon. Breakfast can be packed to go for early risers.
Leisure and Surroundings
Guests can relax in the lodge-like living room with a field stone fireplace and mission style furnishings or enjoy the garden hot tub. The garden has been certified as a Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The guest deck provides an overlook to the gardens. Orcas Island offers opportunities for birding, visiting organic farms open to the public, and exploring the Orcas Center for the Performing Arts and Turtleback Mountain. Moran State Park, with hiking trails, lakes, and views, is four miles away. Whale watching tours are available to view orca, minkes, humpbacks, seals, sea lions, and bald eagles.
Location and Access
Kangaroo House is near Eastsound Village, with its historical museum, shops, dining, and a movie theatre. The location is convenient for kayaking, cycling, and world-class skateboarding. The inn is near potteries, organic farms open to the public, the Orcas Center for the Performing Arts, and Moran State Park. Orcas Island has 247 days of sunshine per year. The inn can be reached by ferry; a packaged train ticket is available from Amtrak to the Anacortes ferry terminal. The local airstrip (KORS) is within walking distance; Orcas Taxi can transport bicycles.

Kangaroo House serves guests 12 years and older, with quiet hours from 10pm to 7am. The garden has an open-air hot tub. Jill writes, teaches creative writing, and runs the arts organization Artsmith. Charles enjoys making and building things by hand, antique tools, blacksmithing, and other work craft lost to the industrial revolution.
